What is the use of an Amber Volumetric Flask?
What is a volumetric flask?
A volumetric flask, also known as a measuring flask/ graduated flask is a laboratory apparatus that is calibrated in a way so that at a particular temperature it will hold a precise volume only. These flasks are usually pear-shaped, with a flat bottom & used for the preparation of standard reactions and precise dilutions. They are mostly made up of glass or plastic. The mouth of the flask is usually fitted with a join to accommodate a glass stopper or a screw cap. There are graduation markings on the elongated & narrow neck of the volumetric flasks. These markings denote the volume of liquid contained when filled up to that point. The stop-cock used in these flasks is chemical resistant.
How is the amber volumetric flask different than the regular volumetric flask?
The volumetric flasks used in the laboratory also come in amber color & their use is slightly different than that of the regular volumetric flasks. They come in various capacities, according to the requirement like 1ml, 5ml, 20ml, 50ml, 100ml, 200ml, 1000ml etc. The volumetric flasks that are extremely small are in the shape of a test tube. These flasks have an amber coating on their exterior surface to facilitate use with light sensitive solutions/ mixtures or for light sensitive studies. These flasks are designed to impart pipette access along with facilitating filling and sampling. The amber volumetric flasks are usually made up of the borosilicate glass & their accuracy is maintained as per the finest standards.
